Music in Jeffco

Music education rooted in the Colorado Academic Standards is an integral part of Jeffco's core curriculum and provides students with unique experiences and skills essential for success in school and beyond. Students are provided instruction in all aspects of music: singing, playing, moving, reading, listening, analyzing, creating and performing.

Classes and Course Descriptions

String orchestra

This course is offered to all students with previous experience with a traditional orchestra instrument. Continued emphasis is given to the development of musicianship and basic skills through a large repertoire of appropriate-level band literature. Class activities emphasize the development of instrument technique, tone production, tuning, fundamentals of music theory, music reading and listening skills.

String orchestra is designed to teach teamwork, and self-discipline and develop the higher-level thinking skills necessary to express one's self through music.

Concert band

This course is offered to all students with previous experience with a traditional band instrument. Continued emphasis is given to the development of musicianship and basic skills through a large repertoire of appropriate-level band literature. Class activities emphasize the development of instrument technique, tone production, tuning, fundamentals of music theory, music reading and listening skills.

Concert band is designed to teach teamwork, and self-discipline and develop the higher-level thinking skills necessary to express one's self through music. Our advanced wind and percussion group, the symphonic band, is run simultaneously with the concert band to allow us to rehearse and perform with a larger group.

Chamber orchestra

This course is an extension of the skills taught in concert band and string orchestra. It is an upper-level performance opportunity for accomplished wind, string and percussion players. Full orchestra offers students great variety and challenge in musical performance, including experiences in chamber music. Emphasis is on the advancement of instrument technique, the further development of ensemble performance skills, aural skills and rehearsal and performance of intermediate to advanced level music.

Chamber orchestra is designed to teach teamwork, and self-discipline and develop the higher-level thinking skills necessary to express one's self through music.

Chamber Orchestra members are highly encouraged to audition for All-County Orchestra and are encouraged to audition for All-State.
